ECT is the safest,
fastest and most effective treatment available today
for the treatment of all mood disorders. It is especially
applicable for more severe or treatment refractory episodes
of depression or mania. It can be started at any point
in the treatment of mental illness and can be combined
with psychotropic medication and psychotherapy. It is
covered by most insurance plans and is done in the safety
of a hospital suite with a psychiatrist, anesthesiologist
and nursing support. It can be accomplished either on
an inpatient or outpatient basis. There are no age restrictions
or absolute medical contraindications.
An ECT course usually requires an initial six to twelve
treatments over a three to four week period with likely
maintenance treatments monthly until full recovery is
achieved. Intermittent evaluations in the office by
a psychiatrist are required as well. Side effects are
usually quite tolerable and range from headache, muscle
aches and possible transient short-term memory loss.
Medical clearance by your PCP and recent bloodwork are
required to initiate the process.
Please contact our office at extension 201 if you wish
to have an ECT evaluation. One of our nurses or psychiatrists
will be more than happy to discuss this option with
you at greater length.
